Prescott College, Arizona. He concentrated his study in the wisdom traditions
of the Classical period, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism in the East,
and Presocratic Greek philosophy, Platonism, Hermeticism, Gnosticism, and
Neoplatonism in the West.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">In
graduate school I studied the classical philosophies of the ancient East and
West, also called the<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Perennial Philosophy </span></em><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif"; font-style: normal; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">of the </span></em><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Axial
Age</span></em>. This era of human history produced many great world teachers,
some so great that religions formed around them. My thesis question was, what
did the great world teachers have in common? I wrote a philosophical novel for
my graduate thesis to answer the question. I won't go into that here but will just
say a big commonality I found among the perennial philosophers was a
recognition of the <i>coincidentia</i> <i>oppositorum</i>. It is the metaphysical idea
that all pairs of opposites, and other things and ideas that appear different from
each other, all flow from a singular mysterious source.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Before
we reach enlightenment, we see pairs of opposites as being in flat contradiction
to one another. Black and white, hot and cold, love and hate, right and wrong,
are all diametrically opposed. As we move closer to enlightenment, things shift
and we begin to see all pairs of opposites as being "in play" with one
another, forming creative paradoxes. They define each other and neither has
meaning or value without the other. The perennial philosophers considered this insight
the most important realization a human being can come to, and the key to the
end of suffering. My book,<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">The Education of Adam Speaker:
A Philosophical Adventure,</span></em><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif"; font-style: normal; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;"> takes the reader on a pretty
deep plunge into such ideas, comparing the insights of nine great world
teachers as they converse with an aspiring student:<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W2YL79U<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Not
long after grad school, when I was teaching and advising in academic, corporate,
and other educational environments, I realized <i><u>another</u></i> big commonality among the great world teachers: They
were all heroes. They overcame obstacles to achieve things that have benefited
humankind for millennia. We read about their adventures and become stimulated to emulate them, to set out
on our own necessary quests.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">I
wanted to get the concept of the hero's journey into my teaching curriculum. As
fate<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>would have it, I kept
bumping into the work of the twentieth century mythologist Joseph Campbell, who
was completely versed in not only in all of the world’s spiritual traditions
and mythologies, but also the depth psychology of Carl Jung. He saw the
connections between these two disciplines and years later, laid them out in his
1949 classic,<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">The Hero with a Thousand Faces</span></em>.
This masterwork proved to be an able blueprint for teaching the hero's journey
model, and I knew if I interpreted Campbell in a practical way, his messages
could be used as a roadmap for both students and counseling clients to achieve
breakthroughs, and as a leadership tool in organizational development. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Through
his writings and lectures, Campbell completely illuminated the idea that the
quests we all undertake in the outer world are tangible expressions and mirrors
of the more important inward journey we are also taking—the psycho-spiritual
adventure we must navigate to reach anything approaching enlightenment...or at the
least, a richer life that makes sense with all its heavenly highs and hellish
lows. Though Campbell was a brilliant thinker and writer, his prosaic writing style
was a bit old-fashioned, Edwardian perhaps.
I needed to find a more accessible way to convey his ideas about the
hero quest.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">It
hit me one day that film might be a useful means of communication, simply
because everyone loves to watch a good movie. This was the late 1990’s and my initial
research revealed that while many had written about film as a model for the
hero’s journey, almost no one had tied in the deeper psychological relevances and
spiritual parallels. So I began a perusal of probably a hundred Hollywood
feature films over a two-year period, and identified a dozen that I
thought would best demonstrate Campbell’s stages of the heroic quest and their
related inner resonances.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Century Schoolbook', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">The
eventual result was a class I created called<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><em><span style="font-family: "Century Schoolbook","serif";">Quest Mythology In Film</span></em>,
one of the most popular educational events of my teaching career. I taught this
12-week class for three years, with over seven hundred participants. We
watched and discussed all the selected films together, and I wrote a paper providing
my interpretation of each film in the context of the hero quest...with substantial
student input I should add. The program turned out to be a very co-creative
process, and a huge learning experience for me. In this book I have published
the twelve film papers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
